Speech Lessons From a Bee

16Jun

When you think about bees, one of the first things that comes to mind is honey. But did you
know that not all honey is sweet? When I first heard this I was shocked and began to do a little
research. Apparently, it is not uncommon, especially in other parts of the world. One person even
mentioned that in the Philippines children will go around with a bucket of honey trying to sell some to
whoever passes by. You should always taste the honey first because sometimes it is sweet and
sometimes it is bitter. So, what determines if the honey is sweet or bitter? It all boils down to what the
bee is feeding on. If the bee gets his nectar from flowers such as rapeseed, lavender, dandelion,
cornflower, linden, and heather, the resulting honey is usually bitter. Not only is the taste affected by
where the bees get their nectar, the appearance of the honey changes too. Most sweet honeys have a
beautiful golden color. The bitter honeys can have a greet tent, be brown, or be almost black.
As a Christian our speech can be like honey. Is your speech sweet and golden, or is it bitter and
negative? My question to you is what are YOU feeding on? Where do you find your thought dwelling
throughout the day? Do you spend a lot of time watching the news or on social media where you hear
about all the ugly and evil things going on in the world? If so, it won’t be long before you are
discouraged, angry, and even bitter at what you see. Those negative thoughts will soon become
negative speech and actions. The only way to combat this is by meditating on God’s word. Psalms 12:6
says “The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.”
Psalms 119:103 says “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”
We need to be spending time with God each and every day. When do you have your quiet time with
God? Did you know that beekeepers will place their hives where they will get early morning sun. Just as
the S.U.N. warms the bees and gets them up and out working early to be there most productive, we
need to be with the S.O.N. early to be our most productive for Christ each day. Psalm 19:14 says “Let
the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength,
and my redeemer. What do you find yourself meditating on? Do your words and actions please the
Lord? Remember “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” Psalm 18:21. We want our words and
actions to be sweet not bitter. Proverbs 16:24 “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul
and health to the bones.”
