Polish Your Shoes

By: Greg Hauser

I have a variety of shoes to choose from every day.  Sneakers, boots, casual shoes, and dress shoes.  Since I work in sales, I wear dress shoes most days.  I typically alternate between black dress shoes, and brown dress boots, depending on what outfit I'm wearing.

On one particular day, I was wearing my black dress shoes.  I happened to glance down at them while standing next to my desk, and I realized they looked awful.  They were dirty, and had strange stains on them.  I immediately thought, "I need to polish my shoes."

Shouldn't this be how we respond to sin?  Sin can sneak up on us just like dirt on our shoes.  We may not realize it's there right away, but we eventually notice.  Shouldn't our response be to clean off the sin, so we can be presentable to God.

1 John 1:8-9 tells us "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

God's word tells us right there, plain as day, that we have sin on us.  We are lying to ourselves if we think we don't.  However, it also tells us that we can confess our sins and be forgiven and cleansed.

Make sure you are taking the time to check your shoes.  Look to see if you are dirty with sin.  When you look down and see that your shoes need polished, don't wait.  Confess your sins and be forgiven.  Allow the Lord to polish you while you polish your shoes.
